According to the CDC getting to Machu Picchu can expose travelers through affected areas of Yellow fever (1), but Machu Picchu peak or Machu Picchu archeological site is not at risk of Yellow fever. Still, avoiding mosquito bites and getting yellow fever vaccine is recommended.
Until May of 2025, 36 cases were reported and 13 died due to Yellow fever in Peru (2), none of them were vaccinated. this is the highest number in the past 15 years reason why authorities have warned concerning a possible urban outbreak, vaccination campaigns in five regions (including Amazonas, Huánuco, San Martin, Loreto and Junín ) for considered vulnerable population of Peru have started. Vaccination for Yellow fever is always suggested, you only need one dosage for life protection, if you are going to travel to any region at risk of Yellow fever you need to get the vaccine at least 10 days prior to your trip.
